Babar Azam Joins Sydney Sixers for BBL|15 in Historic Signing

In a groundbreaking move that underscores his global appeal, Pakistan’s batting maestro Babar Azam has officially signed with the Sydney Sixers for the upcoming KFC Big Bash League (BBL) season 15, marking one of the most high-profile acquisitions in the league’s history.

The elegant right-hander, widely regarded as one of the finest batters of the modern era, will be available for the entire tournament, including the finals, providing the Sixers with a massive boost in both skill and star power.

Babar’s signing comes ahead of the official BBL|15 Draft, scheduled for Thursday, 19 June, where clubs are permitted to pre-sign one overseas player. His inclusion marks his debut in Australia’s premier T20 league, despite having plied his trade across other top-tier tournaments including the Pakistan Super League (PSL), Caribbean Premier League (CPL) and England’s T20 Blast.

With over 11,000 runs in T20 cricket and more than 10,000 runs across all international formats, Babar brings with him a reputation for class, consistency, and composure — qualities that have seen him dominate world cricket in recent years.

A central figure for Pakistan over the last decade, Babar captained the national side in all formats between 2019 and 2024, leading Pakistan to the semi-final of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2021 and the final in 2022.

His accolades include being named ICC ODI Cricketer of the Year in 2021 and 2022, and the ICC Men’s Cricketer of the Year in 2022. He also holds the record as the fastest batter to 5000 ODI runs, a feat he achieved in just 97 innings.

The Sydney Sixers, one of the most successful franchises in BBL history, are viewing this signing as a milestone in their mission to become a global destination club.

“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Babar to the Sixers this summer,” said Rachael Haynes, General Manager of the Sydney Sixers.
“Babar’s resume speaks for itself. The skill, professionalism, and experience that he brings is of enormous value to our playing group and the news is obviously incredibly exciting for our fans.”

Haynes also emphasized the club’s broader ambitions:

“The Sixers strive to be a destination club on the global stage – from playing at the iconic SCG to delivering world-class match day experiences and signing the top talent from around the world – and securing a player of Babar’s calibre only further strengthens that vision.”

Speaking on the move, Babar Azam shared his excitement about playing in front of Australian crowds and joining one of the most successful BBL franchises.

“I’m very proud to be joining the Sydney Sixers for the upcoming season,” Babar said.
“It’s an exciting opportunity to play in one of the world’s best T20 leagues and to be a part of such a successful and respected franchise.
I’m looking forward to contributing to the team’s success, building a strong connection with the fans, and sharing this experience with my friends, family and supporters at home in Pakistan.”
