Cricket Unites for a Cause: Zalmi Edge Legends in Thrilling Flood Relief Exhibition Match

In a spectacular display of solidarity and sporting spirit, Peshawar Zalmi narrowly defeated a star-studded Legends XI by eight runs in a high-octane exhibition match at a packed Imran Khan Cricket Stadium on Saturday. But the real winner of the evening was the noble cause of flood relief, as the historic event, played under the banner of “Khel Se Khidmat” (Service through Sports), successfully rallied the nation to support victims of the recent devastating floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The match, organized by Peshawar Zalmi in collaboration with the Directorate General of Sports KP and the Provincial Government, marked a triumphant return of top-flight cricket to the city after nearly two decades, transforming the venue into a carnival of hope and generosity.

A Star-Studded Affair for a Noble Cause

The stadium buzzed with electric energy as thousands of fans from Peshawar and remote areas of KP gathered, making it a houseful event. The air was thick with anticipation and echoed with chants of “Pakistan Zindabad,” welcoming a galaxy of cricketing icons.

The Legends XI, captained by the formidable Inzamam-ul-Haq, featured a who’s who of Pakistani cricket history, including Shahid Afridi, Waqar Younis, Shoaib Akhtar, Younis Khan, and Mohammad Hafeez. They were pitted against a spirited Peshawar Zalmi side led by modern-day superstar Babar Azam.

PSL COO Salman Naseer, Provincial Minister for Sports Syed Fakhar Jahan, other provincial ministers, and city dignitaries were in attendance, underscoring the event’s significance.

A Rollercoaster Match

After a brief rain delay, for which the ground staff worked tirelessly to prepare the field, Legends captain Inzamam-ul-Haq won the toss and elected to field first.

Peshawar Zalmi roared out of the gates with a blistering 50-run opening stand between skipper Babar Azam and Yasir Hameed. Babar looked in sublime touch, crafting a elegant 41 off just 23 balls, while Hameed provided the fireworks with a rapid 35 from 18 deliveries.

However, the innings unraveled spectacularly after the openers departed. The legendary spin duo of Shahid Afridi and Abdur Rehman triggered a stunning collapse, weaving a web around the Zalmi batters. Wickets tumbled at an alarming rate, with the middle and lower order offering little resistance. Afridi (3 wickets) and Rehman (3 wickets) ripped through the lineup, ably supported by Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez (2 wickets each), bundling Zalmi out for 144 in just 14.4 overs.

In response, the Legends’ run chase got off to a disastrous start. The towering Mohammad Irfan and Salman Khan struck early blows, reducing the legends to a precarious 6-3 within the first three overs, dismissing Kamran Ghulam, Imran Farhat, and Mohammad Hafeez cheaply.

Brief partnerships between Azhar Ali (9) and Humayun Farhat (27 off 15) offered hope, but Babar Azam himself entered the attack to remove the great Younis Khan for just 2, leaving Legends reeling at 62-6.

Just when defeat seemed inevitable, Inzamam-ul-Haq turned back the clock. Joined first by Arif and then by the hard-hitting Azhar Mahmood, the veteran skipper launched a breathtaking counter-attack. His innings of 46 not out off 23 balls, punctuated by powerful boundaries and towering sixes, brought the crowd to its feet. Azhar Mahmood provided sterling support with a fiery 34 off 14 balls, and their 50-run partnership set up a nail-biting finale.

With 22 needed off the last over, the match hung in the balance. However, Zalmi’s bowlers held their nerve, restricting the Legends to 138/6, securing a narrow but thrilling eight-run victory.

A n Afternoon to Remember

While Zalmi claimed the bragging rights on the field, the true victory was celebrated off it. The event successfully channeled the nation’s passion for cricket into tangible support for those in need, with 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales directed towards flood relief and rehabilitation efforts across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Chairman Peshawar Zalmi, Javed Afridi, expressed his profound gratitude, stating, “Pakhair Raghle to all Pakistani superstar cricketers and fans. Peshawar Zalmi and the cricket community stand firmly with the flood victims during these challenging times. We are committed to providing every possible support to our affected brothers and sisters.”

Provincial Minister for Sports Syed Fakhar Jahan reiterated the message of solidarity, emphasizing that “sports is not just entertainment but a means of service.”

The Flood Relief Exhibition Match will be remembered not just for the thrilling cricket and the triumphant return of the sport to Peshawar, but as a powerful testament to how the spirit of the game can unite a community and forge a path toward healing and recovery.
