FIFA clears Etzaz Hussain to represent Pakistan

Pakistan football received a major lift this week as FIFA approved midfielder Etzaz Hussain’s change of sporting nationality, officially paving the way for the Norway-born player to represent the Pakistan men’s national team.

The 32-year-old, who once shared the pitch with striker Erling Haaland at Molde FK, completed the formal switch after FIFA’s confirmation earlier this week. Hussain had secured a Pakistani passport in early 2024 and had openly voiced his ambition to don the green jersey.

A product of Manchester United’s youth academy, Hussain began his journey in Oslo before moving to England in 2009. Although he did not make the first team at Old Trafford, he described his time at United as “an experience for life.” His professional debut came in 2011 with Fredrikstad, where he quickly made his mark by scoring in the Norwegian Cup.

Hussain’s defining years came at Molde FK, where he became one of the most decorated players in the club’s history. Under Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s management, he established himself as a central figure in midfield, winning four Eliteserien league titles and three Norwegian Cups. His career tally includes nearly 300 professional appearances, with stints in Turkey, Croatia, Cyprus and most recently Norway’s second-tier side Odd.

Despite representing Norway at youth levels from U16 to U23, Hussain never featured in senior competitive internationals, leaving the door open for a switch. With his eligibility now secured, he is set to bring a wealth of European top-flight experience and composure to Pakistan’s midfield.

Officials within the Pakistan Football Federation hailed the development, calling it “a landmark moment” for the sport in the country. “Having a player of Etzaz Hussain’s caliber and experience will inspire both the team and the fans,” a PFF official said.

Proud of his roots in Kharian, Gujrat, Hussain has often spoken of his connection to Pakistan. In 2021, he was honoured by the Pakistan Embassy in Oslo during Independence Day celebrations, an early sign of the bond he hoped to strengthen through football.

For Pakistan, Hussain’s arrival represents more than just an addition to the squad. It is a statement of intent, a symbol of ambition, and perhaps the beginning of a new chapter where overseas-born talent helps elevate the national team to greater heights.
