Hyderabad, the newest franchise to join the Pakistan Super League (PSL), has officially appointed former Australian fast bowler Jason Gillespie as its head coach ahead of the upcoming season.
The franchise confirmed that negotiations with Gillespie were concluded successfully, resulting in a formal coaching agreement as Hyderabad begin preparations for their debut PSL campaign.
Gillespie brings with him vast international experience, both as a player and coach. A former Australia international pacer, he has previously worked within Pakistan’s cricketing setup, having been appointed head coach of the national Test side in April 2024, alongside white-ball head coach Gary Kirsten.
However, Gillespie’s stint with Pakistan was short-lived. He stepped down from the role in December 2024, reportedly due to differences with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), just ahead of Pakistan’s Test tour of South Africa.
Despite the brief tenure, Gillespie’s familiarity with Pakistan cricket and the regional talent pool is expected to be a valuable asset for Hyderabad as the franchise builds its identity in the expanded PSL.
Hyderabad’s appointment of an internationally renowned coach underlines the league’s growing ambition and the franchise’s intent to establish a competitive structure from its very first season.
