The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed renowned cricket strategist and former New Zealand coach Mike Hesson as the white-ball head coach of the Pakistan men’s national team. His appointment will be effective from 26 May 2025, ahead of a busy international calendar for Pakistan.
The decision comes after a comprehensive selection process involving evaluation of multiple high-profile applications for the role, which had been vacant since Pakistan’s tour of New Zealand concluded in April.
A respected figure in international coaching circles, Hesson has previously served as head coach of New Zealand, where he is credited with helping transform the Black Caps into a consistent white-ball force. He has also coached Kenya and held key leadership roles in franchise T20 leagues across the world. Most recently, Hesson has been leading Islamabad United in the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL), with the franchise currently defending their title in the ongoing 10th edition of the tournament.
PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi Welcomes Hesson
In a statement released by the board, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed his confidence in Hesson’s ability to steer Pakistan’s white-ball teams to new heights:
“I am pleased to announce the appointment of former New Zealand cricketer and renowned coach Mike Hesson as the white-ball head coach of the Pakistan men’s team. Mike brings with him a wealth of international experience and a proven track record of developing competitive sides. We look forward to his expertise and leadership in shaping the future of Pakistan’s white-ball cricket. Welcome to the team, Mike!”
Hesson’s appointment signals PCB’s intent to strengthen Pakistan’s ODI and T20I performances in the lead-up to key events, including the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, scheduled to be held in Pakistan, and the ICC T20 World Cup in 2026.
The board is expected to announce the red-ball head coach separately in due course, as part of its broader vision to create specialized coaching setups across formats.
Hesson will take charge shortly after the conclusion of the HBL PSL X playoffs, which conclude on 18 May, and is likely to link up with the national squad ahead of their upcoming white-ball assignments.
