Mitchell Owen’s Blazing Century Powers Hobart Hurricanes to Maiden BBL Title

A breathtaking century from Mitchell Owen propelled Hobart Hurricanes to a dominant seven-wicket victory over Sydney Thunder, securing their first-ever Big Bash League (BBL) title at Bellerive Oval on Monday.

Chasing 183 in the final, the Hurricanes stormed to victory with 35 balls to spare, thanks to Owen’s record-equalling 39-ball century—the joint-fastest in BBL history.

The right-hander launched an all-out assault on the Thunder’s bowling attack, reaching his hundred inside 10 overs. He smashed six fours and 11 sixes in his blistering 42-ball 108 before departing with just 44 runs needed from 58 deliveries.

Hurricanes Dominate Run Chase

Following Owen’s fireworks, Matthew Wade (32 off 17, five fours, one six) and Ben McDermott (18 off 12) provided the finishing touches as Hurricanes comfortably overhauled the target, sealing their maiden title in emphatic fashion.

Tanveer Sangha was the standout bowler for Thunder, picking up two wickets, while Tom Andrews claimed one.

Thunder’s Strong Start Falls Short

Earlier, Sydney Thunder posted 182/7 after being put in to bat, riding on a solid 97-run opening stand between David Warner (48 off 32) and Tanveer Sangha (67 off 42). However, once Warner fell to Nathan Ellis in the 11th over, the Hurricanes’ bowlers took control.

Regular strikes from Ellis (3/31) and Riley Meredith (3/34) curtailed Thunder’s momentum, preventing them from capitalizing on their strong start.

A Historic Triumph for the Hurricanes

With this victory, the Hurricanes finally ended their wait for a BBL title, delivering a performance that will be remembered as one of the most dominant displays in a final.
