Warner, Vince seal playoffs berth for Karachi Kings with record-breaking win

David Warner and James Vince delivered a masterclass in T20 batting with a record 162-run partnership to guide Karachi Kings to a commanding 23-run victory over Peshawar Zalmi in Match 27 of PSL X at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Saturday night. The win ensured Kings’ qualification for the playoffs, with Islamabad United also confirming their spot, turning Sunday’s clash between Zalmi and Lahore Qalandars into a virtual eliminator.

Opting to field first, Zalmi struck early with Luke Wood removing Ben McDermott for a golden duck. However, Warner and Vince counterattacked with a flurry of boundaries, adding 57 in the Powerplay and pushing Kings to 100 at the halfway mark.

Vince reached his fifty in 29 balls and crossed 12,000 T20 career runs before falling for 72 off 42 (11 fours, one six). Warner, named Player of the Match, scored a scintillating 86 off 49 balls (11 fours, two sixes). Their partnership was bolstered by a brutal finishing act from Khushdil Shah (43* off 15) and Mohammad Nabi (26* off 10), who hammered 72 runs in the final four overs to take Karachi to a PSL-best 237-4.

Despite a valiant effort in reply, Peshawar Zalmi fell short at 214-5. Captain Babar Azam led the chase with a blistering 94 off 49 balls, supported by Saim Ayub’s 47 and a 62-run stand with Tom Kohler-Cadmore. But the momentum stalled after Babar’s run out in the 18th over, and despite late cameos from Maaz Sadaqat and Hussain Talat, Zalmi ended 23 runs adrift.

Mohammad Abbas Afridi, holder of the Fazal Mahmood cap, took 2-48 to lead Karachi’s bowling effort.
