For generations of Pakistani readers, Inspector Jamshed has been more than a fictional detective. He has been a familiar presence in a literary world built around mystery, intelligence, family and an unwavering belief in justice.
Now, one of Pakistan’s most recognisable characters in popular fiction is stepping beyond the page and onto the global screen.
The first trailer for IJ: The Secret Parchment has been unveiled, offering the first glimpse of a contemporary investigative thriller inspired by the celebrated detective novels of legendary Pakistani writer Ishtiaq Ahmed. Led by Omair Rana as Inspector Jamshed, the film seeks to translate a much-loved literary universe into an international cinematic experience while retaining the qualities that made its central character endure.
The trailer introduces the Jamshed family and hints at a mystery in which every clue carries weight and trust is never guaranteed. While much of the larger plot remains deliberately concealed, the footage establishes a world where investigation, family and action are closely intertwined.
From Beloved Books to the Big Screen
Bringing Inspector Jamshed to cinema is an ambitious proposition, given the character’s deep connection with generations of Pakistani readers.
Ishtiaq Ahmed created a vast literary universe during a remarkably prolific career, writing 796 novels and becoming known for producing work at an extraordinary pace. His stories were defined by intricate mysteries, memorable characters and an emphasis on knowledge, observation and justice.
IJ: The Secret Parchment does not simply attempt to recreate that world on screen. Instead, the film reimagines its central ideas for a contemporary international audience.
At its heart is still the Inspector Jamshed readers know: a thoughtful and disciplined investigator whose strength lies not in spectacle, but in his ability to observe, analyse and make principled decisions.
That balance between familiarity and reinvention appears to be one of the film’s central ambitions.
A Family at the Heart of the Mystery
While the title character remains the driving force, IJ: The Secret Parchment places the Jamshed family firmly at the centre of its story.
Anoushay Abbasi plays Shakeela Begum, Mrs. Jamshed, while Ravel Imran, Ahmed Harkous and Aline Harkous portray Mehmood, Farooq and Farzana — the next generation of the family.
The film also expands Inspector Jamshed’s world with characters including Professor Daud, whose intelligence adds another dimension to the investigation, and Khan Rehman, Jamshed’s longtime friend and trusted ally, played by Asif Raza Mir.
The wider ensemble includes Ahad Raza Mir as Behzaad, Faran Tahir as Zafar Iqbal Burki and Jad Hadid as Sub-Inspector Ikram.
The result is a story that appears to balance the mechanics of a detective thriller with a more intimate family narrative.
For director Fahd Nur, that human element was something the production could not afford to lose while expanding the scale of the story.
“The difficult part was never making the world bigger. It was knowing what not to lose when we did,” Nur says. “Inspector Jamshed works because the clues matter, the danger has consequences, and the family at its centre keeps the story human.”
An International Film With Pakistani Roots
The global ambitions of IJ: The Secret Parchment are evident not only in its story but also in its production.
The film features performers from 13 different nationalities, creating an unusually diverse ensemble around a character whose origins are firmly rooted in Pakistani popular literature.
Screenplay writer Eric Berg captures that ambition succinctly, saying: “Now, at this stage, Inspector Jamshed doesn’t belong to a nation. It belongs to the world.”
Yet the film’s international character does not erase its origins. Instead, it positions Inspector Jamshed as a Pakistani creation capable of travelling across cultural boundaries through universally recognisable ideas — family, loyalty, curiosity, courage and the pursuit of truth.
Filmed Across the UAE
The scale of the production is equally substantial.
Filmed over 104 production days across more than 30 locations in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the film uses some of the UAE’s most recognisable contemporary and architectural settings.
Among the locations are Louvre Abu Dhabi, Zayed University, Masdar City, Reem Island, Aldar Headquarters, Al Khatim Desert and Sheikh Zayed Bridge.
Approximately 1,300 people were involved across the production, underlining the scale of an undertaking designed for an international theatrical audience.
Visually, the film was shot using large-format Arri anamorphic lenses and designed for Dolby Atmos, suggesting a cinematic experience that aims to match the ambition of its story.
Action With Global Credentials
Although investigation remains at the centre of IJ: The Secret Parchment, the trailer also points towards a significant action component.
Stunt director George Kirby, whose credits include Game of Thrones, The Batman and Doctor Strange, contributed to the film’s physical action. The Andy Long Stunt Team brought its martial-arts and stunt expertise to the production, while action director Amr McGyver oversaw the car-action sequences, including driving and chase scenes.
That combination suggests that the film is aiming for more than a traditional detective mystery. The world of Inspector Jamshed is being expanded into a hybrid of investigation, family adventure and grounded action.
The production’s visual world was developed by art director Jordane Chedotal, whose previous credits include Dune: Part Two, Star Trek Beyond and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Her involvement further reinforces the film’s international production credentials while helping establish a contemporary environment in which an old literary legacy can be reintroduced to a new audience.
Omair Rana Takes on an Icon
At the centre of it all is Omair Rana, tasked with bringing one of Pakistani fiction’s most recognisable detectives to life.
Rather than approaching Inspector Jamshed as a conventional action hero, Rana says he focused on the character’s intelligence and restraint.
“Inspector Jamshed is a character many people already know and care about,” Rana says. “I approached him as a thoughtful, disciplined man whose strength comes from observation rather than noise.”
That distinction could prove important to the film’s identity.
In an era of increasingly spectacle-driven screen detectives, Inspector Jamshed’s defining strength has always been his mind. Preserving that quality while placing him inside a large-scale cinematic thriller may be one of the film’s biggest creative challenges — and potentially its greatest strength.
Carrying Forward Ishtiaq Ahmed’s Legacy
For executive producer Muhammad Adnan Butt, the film represents something larger than an adaptation.
“Inspector Jamshed has lived in the imagination of readers for decades,” Butt says. “We wanted to honour Ishtiaq Ahmed’s work with a film for audiences around the world.”
That sense of responsibility hangs over the project. Translating a beloved literary character to cinema inevitably raises expectations among longtime readers, while the film must simultaneously establish itself for audiences encountering Inspector Jamshed for the first time.
IJ: The Secret Parchment therefore occupies an interesting space: it is both an adaptation of a Pakistani literary legacy and an attempt to create a contemporary international franchise world around it.
A New Chapter for a Familiar Detective
The first trailer deliberately leaves many questions unanswered. What exactly is the secret parchment? Who can Inspector Jamshed trust? And how far will the investigation take the family?
For now, those answers remain behind the mystery.
What the trailer does establish is the scale of the ambition. A detective created within the pages of Pakistani popular fiction is being placed inside a contemporary international production featuring a multinational cast, major UAE locations and an experienced global crew.
If the film succeeds in retaining the intelligence, family values and sense of justice at the heart of Ishtiaq Ahmed’s creation while delivering the scale expected of a modern theatrical thriller, Inspector Jamshed could find an entirely new generation of followers.
The character may have begun in Pakistan’s bookshelves. With IJ: The Secret Parchment, his next chapter is being written for the world.
