PSL 2026 to Be Held Without Spectators Amid Economic Crisis Concerns, Confirms PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi

The Pakistan Super League (PSL) will commence on March 26 but will be played behind closed doors due to the prevailing regional security situation, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi announced on Sunday.

Speaking at a press conference at Gaddafi Stadium, Naqvi said the decision followed extensive consultations with the government and security agencies. He emphasised that all matters related to the tournament had been finalised in coordination with relevant authorities, noting that uncertainty around the current situation made it difficult to predict when normal conditions would return.

With spectators not permitted inside stadiums, the PCB has also revised the tournament’s logistics. Instead of hosting matches across multiple venues, the PSL will now be limited to two cities — Karachi and Lahore. Naqvi added that Peshawar is expected to host more matches in the next edition of the league once conditions stabilise.

The PCB chairman further confirmed that the traditional PSL opening ceremony has been cancelled, and fans will not be allowed entry into stadiums unless there is a significant improvement in the situation. However, he assured that ticket holders would be fully refunded.

Addressing concerns from franchise owners, Naqvi stated that the PCB would compensate teams for financial losses resulting from the absence of crowds. He noted that all franchises had been taken into confidence and remained supportive of the board’s decisions.

Despite the restrictions, Naqvi maintained that Pakistan remains a safe country, describing the situation as part of broader regional developments rather than a direct internal security threat. He also confirmed that international players are expected to begin arriving shortly, adding that the league has a strong pool of available talent.

He reiterated that postponing the tournament was not a viable option, as it would have disrupted the already packed cricket calendar for the remainder of the year.

In addition, Naqvi revealed that the PCB would take action against players who terminated their PSL contracts to participate in other leagues, signalling a firm stance on contractual commitments.

The upcoming edition of the PSL will now proceed under unprecedented circumstances, with empty stadiums replacing the traditionally vibrant crowds, as the league prioritises continuity while navigating a complex regional environment.
