One of Pakistan’s most prominent broadcast journalists, Shiffa Yousafzai, has officially broken her silence regarding her recent absence from the television screen. In a heartfelt message addressed to her mentors and supporters, Yousafzai announced that she has moved to the United Kingdom to pursue an interdisciplinary PhD at the University of Leicester.
The announcement comes after months of speculation from viewers who had noticed her absence from current affairs programming.
Shiffa Yousafzai’s media journey is one of rapid ascent and versatility. After completing her MA in Multimedia Journalism from Manchester, she became a founding member of the launch team at Hum News. She expressed deep gratitude to industry veterans Sultana Siddiqi and Duraid Qureshi for providing her with the platform that kickstarted her career.
Her professional trajectory saw her move from Hum News to 92 News, followed by a brief stint at Aik News. Most recently, she was seen on 365 News, where she achieved a significant career milestone by transitioning from breakfast show hosting to anchoring a dedicated current affairs program—a long-held professional goal.
Reflecting on her time at 365 News, Shiffa acknowledged the support of her management and producers, Zeeshan and Tehseen, who helped her navigate the high-stakes world of political talk shows.
In a revelation that surprised many, Yousafzai shared that while managing the daily pressures of television, she was also pursuing an LLB from the University of London. She credited her parents and close friends for their emotional support during this grueling period, specifically thanking fellow journalist Ovais Mangalwala for his support during her examination periods.
Her decision to pivot toward academia is driven by a desire to understand the “rapid transformation of the communication landscape.” Her PhD at the University of Leicester will focus on AI-driven digital media and its intersection with the law—a field she believes is crucial for the future of global communication and Pakistan.
Yousafzai did not shy away from discussing the challenges that influenced her departure from legacy media. She noted that while digital platforms have offered new freedoms, they have also brought unique forms of censorship.
“For many of us, being on TV without compromising on ethical principles and values has become nearly impossible,” she stated, adding that it is painful to be part of a profession where condemning injustice comes at a high personal cost. “Maybe we in the media are becoming part of the problem instead of solution providers.”
Despite her move to the UK, Shiffa assured her audience that this is not a final goodbye to the screen. She intends to remain active as an independent commentator, utilizing digital platforms to debate the “possibilities of freedom” in the new age.
Quoting the Prophet (PBUH) on the significance and rewards of Hijrah (migration), Shiffa described the decision to leave her life in Pakistan as the most difficult of her life but expressed optimism for the future.
For the followers of Shiffa Yousafzai and the Pakistani media landscape, this move marks the end of an era in broadcast journalism and the beginning of a scholarly pursuit that aims to find solutions for the media challenges of tomorrow.
